What to Expect

Dr. Maser and Dr. Bates customize procedures to meet the needs of each San Jose breast reconstruction patient, so each procedure is slightly different.

  • They often performs TRAM flap techniques which use your own skin, muscle and tissue from your abdomen to create a reconstructed breast. TRAM flap procedures are a good option for women who have lost a significant amount of breast tissue.
  • Breast implants can also be used to recreate the breast mound. If this method is used, a 4- to 6-month period for tissue expansion may be required. During this period, an inflatable implant will be placed underneath the skin and will be filled slowly so that the skin is stretched and can accommodate a standard breast implant.
  • Often, a flap technique instead of tissue expansion will be used in combination with augmentation and breast implants. In addition, a variety of techniques can be used to recreate the nipple and areola.

After breast reconstruction, bandages and a support bra will protect your new breast. Pain medication will be provided for any discomfort that you may experience. As directed by your surgeon, you should be cautious for a period after surgery and avoid any extreme movement or abrasion.
