Microneedling
Microneedling is a favorite skin rejuvenation treatment with our San Jose, California, medical spa patients who want to attain brighter, smoother, firmer skin, fade scars, and more with minimal downtime. We offer the option of traditional microneedling with SkinPen® and enhanced, radiofrequency microneedling with VirtueRF, making treatments more effective with less discomfort.

How Does It Work?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, creates tiny injuries on the surface of the skin with fine needles to stimulate the healing process. The body generates new skin cells, collagen, and elastin.

What Makes VirtueRF Different?
VirtueRF improves microneedling results by delivering radiofrequency (RF) energy from the ends of the needles, affecting the skin’s deeper layers. The device inserts the needles with a robotic precision delivery (RPD) system for more treatments that are more comfortable than SkinPen.
VirtueRF Treatment Options
This device has the following 3 handpieces that enable us to control treatment precision:
- ExactRF is a single-needle handpiece for precisely targeting skin laxity in delicate areas around the eyes, mouth, and jawline. It can also reduce fluid-filled bags called festoons (malar mounds) and eye bags.
- SmartRF is a 36-needle handpiece for softening fine lines and wrinkles, reducing laxity, and improving skin tone and texture on the face, neck, décolletage, and back of the hands.
- DeepRF is a 36-needle handpiece with a cooling plate for tightening and smoothing skin under the chin and on the cheeks, neck, arms, abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. It can also reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.

What To Expect
Our experienced aesthetic nurse performs microneedling in our comfortable office setting. After preparing your skin with numbing cream, she chooses the proper handpiece (if you’re having VirtueRF) and customizes the settings on the microneedling device for the specific treatment area and your individual needs.
The nurse performs the treatment by moving the handpiece over the skin as the needles quickly prick the skin and retract. VirtueRF releases RF energy each time the needles are fully extended. The treatment creates a sandpaper or prickling sensation and warmth from RF energy (if applicable) but little, if any, discomfort.
Is There Recovery Time?
After a microneedling treatment, expect mild swelling or redness that typically resolves within 48 hours. SkinPen patients may have areas of pinpoint bleeding.
Follow your post-treatment instructions carefully for optimal results and to avoid complications. While no downtime is needed, keep the skin clean and free from makeup for 24 hours to allow the microinjuries to seal. You may also need to avoid certain skincare products.

As it sheds, the skin becomes rough, dry, and flakey within a day or two. Collagen production becomes noticeable after about 4 to 6 weeks, and improvement may continue for about 6 months.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
We recommend a series of 3 to 4 microneedling treatments, each spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, and a maintenance treatment every 6 to 12 months.
